“When I travelled the southeast coast of Brazil for the first time in 1999, I was overwhelmed with and fascinated by the lush nature and the variety of animals and plants in the Atlantic coastal rainforests. At the same time, I was shocked and depressed by the ongoing massive and ruthless destruction of this unique forest nature. Two years later, I was able to deepen my knowledge of the ecology and function of the coastal rainforests as a scientific research assistant in a German-Brazilian research project on the regeneration of rainforests over several years. Together with Markus Mauthe, I came to Ilhéus as a consultant and travel organizer for his photo project “Naturwunder Erde” (Earth’s Natural Wonders) in 2012 to document the highly endangered golden-headed lion tamarins. Again, I was intrigued by those forests and their inhabitants. With the idea of Markus and Achim to start the project AMAP to protect these friendly rare animals in 2016, I saw the chance to make a sustainable contribution to the conservation of those beautiful rainforests. I quickly realized that I wanted to support this great project with my experience and expertise about the Mata Atlântica.”

“I am involved as a volunteer in the reforestation activities of AMAP because it is important to me that the Atlantic Forest, the Mata Atlântica, in Brazil is preserved. It is one of the most species-rich rainforests on earth and the last refuge of the golden-headed lion tamarin. It is important to me to preserve this habitat and this unique ecosystem and securing it for the future. It makes me a bit proud to be part of those reforestation projects. I have already been to Brazil twice and got to know the country and its people. A couple of friendships have developed out of this and I am happy every time I return there and see how everything has developed.”
